Restaurant Research

Prompt

Restaurant websites are a good example of reasonably straight-forward content that can benefit from responsive design across different devices. In this project, you will design a website for a restaurant (real or imagined) that demonstrates how device-friendliness extends the capability and utility of web-based digital content.

Goals

Users

The site will have a wide range and variety of users who will experience the site from different platforms, including, but not limited to: desktops, tablets, and mobile phones. The site needs to be easy to navigate for people with different levels of technology exposure, and also accessible for both English and Spanish speakers.

Presentation

The identity and branding of the restaurant should be clear and consistent. Typography and color play huge roles in this, and as such should be used to establish clear heirarchies throughout the site. Also, presentation of food looks plays a large role in people's decision of what to eat. (We all know the difference between how a McDonald's burger looks in a commercial and in real life...) But the inclusion of different images will help people know what they may be ordering—especially if they are unfamiliar with what certain items, perhaps do to a language barrier, or never haveing eaten Mexican food before.

Responsiveness

The function of the site needs to be adaptable across different devices. This means that different design elements must be easily modified to fit to these different screen sizes. As a result, the overall design cannot be too complicated. Using non-precise measurements such as percentages and ems instead of pixels and points will help accomplish this.

Content & Site Functions

Navigation

The navigation to the site is a crucial way for users to interact and find navigation. It must be clearly accesible, but not take up a lot of room—especially on mobile devices.

Restaurant Menu

The menus will list all items available for lunch and dinner, as well as prices and descriptions. There is also an ice cream menu. It will be broken down into different categories, based on the type of food. Combos/specials can also be a little bit confusing to read, so some sort of information-esque graphic might be helpful to better understand this information.

Contact & Hours

Location, Phone Number, Email, Hours, About, Reviews (?)

Promos & Daily Specials

Exactly what it sounds like. Maybe some online-only coupons to help drive web traffic.

Social Media

Inclusion of social media helps to increase web presence and establish the brand's identity/relations with its customers.
